Public Relations: 10 week placement


Project Objectives

The project aims to give students an understanding about the roles, duties and responsibilities of a Public Relations Officer. Students will experience the process of developing a publicity campaign, organising events and communicating with the media.

Project Description

Students will be expected to work at three of Museum Victoria’s venues during their time in the Public Relations Department – Melbourne Museum, Scienceworks and the Immigration Museum. Some of the tasks that students may be involved with during their internship/placement include:

  • Research and update data for media/stakeholder lists
  • Research media contacts and develop specific media lists for publicity campaigns
  • Draft media releases and other media materials
  • Research information relating to exhibitions
  • Research websites and place listings on appropriate websites
  • File media clippings
  • Package media kits
  • Coordinate and be involved in mail-outs
  • Attend relevant meetings with Marketing, Communications and Commercial staff
  • Assist at media previews and photo opportunities
  • Assist at exhibition launches and other stakeholder events

Project Outcomes

Students will gain an understanding of the role of an in-house PR Officer, and the practical work of publicity and stakeholder relations. The outcomes of each placement/internship will be tailored, depending upon students’ interest and needs, and the Public Relations projects being undertaken at the time.

Student Knowledge & Skills

The student should currently be undertaking a relevant degree in Public Relations / Media / Communications / Journalism at an Australian tertiary institution and have strong communication skills. Third year students are preferred.
